US Considers Action Requiring Banks to Collect Citizenship Data

(MENAFN) The US government is reportedly exploring measures that would require banks to collect more detailed information on customers’ citizenship as part of efforts to curb illegal immigration.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, one option under consideration is an executive order that would compel banks to obtain citizenship information from all clients, potentially requiring documents such as passports to verify status. The exact scope of any directive has not been finalized, and it is unclear whether it would simply mandate additional data collection or extend to closing accounts of individuals unable to provide the requested information.

Officials also indicated that the Treasury Department is reviewing policies aimed at limiting undocumented immigrants’ access to banking services.
